The Florida Immigrant Coalition (FLIC) desires commissioners within the Metropolis of Miami to finish its partnership with Immigration Customs and Enforcement (ICE) that includes native law enforcement officials to help with arresting unlawful immigrants right here within the state.
A number of cities have participated in what is named the federal 287(g) program, which deputizes native law enforcement officials to hold out sure immigration enforcement features.
FLIC is looking on residents to voice their opposition hoping to encourage the Fee to finish the collaboration with ICE.
“Miami’s determination to enter into the settlement was not mandated by state legislation. Miami will depend on sturdy relationships between residents and the native authorities,” the group stated.
In a upcoming metropolis assembly, FLIC says native religion leaders, civil rights organizations, and authorized consultants will testify that this system “undermines public security” and erodes belief between legislation enforcement and the communities it serves.
FLIC claims that the problem of race is concerned when native officers and ICE officers arrest, detain or query people.
“In one of the numerous cities within the nation, the place the colour of your pores and skin, your accent, and even your options turns into a menace, and when immigrants concern that interactions with native police might result in deportation or household separation, they’re much less prone to report crimes, cooperate with investigations, or search emergency help, making neighborhoods much less secure,” FLIC stated.
The immigration situation helped propel President Trump to the White Home in 2024. Whereas Trump is underwater in a number of key points with voters, one of many areas that Florida voters do give him a thumbs up is on border safety, crime and coping with the unlawful immigration disaster within the US.
